Minna: The management of Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Station, a key asset of North South Power (NSP), has committed to fostering closer relationships with its host communities by addressing their concerns. This pledge was made during the Bi-Annual Dam Host Community Stakeholders Committee meeting held in Minna.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Ugochukwu Chioke, the Chief Operating Officer of NSP, highlighted the importance of regular dialogue, transparency, and collaboration in the implementation of community projects. Represented by Mrs. Esther Bitiyong, Consultant on Health, Environment, and Social Services to NSP, Chioke stated that the company would ensure that community concerns are promptly addressed and that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives align with the immediate needs of the people.
Chioke urged committee members to represent their communities effectively and to communicate the outcomes of the meeting to their constituents. He emphasized the importance of their voices in strengthening the relationship between the company and the host communities.
Prof. Danladi Hakimi, Chairman of the Dam Host Stakeholders Committee, noted that the committee was established in 2018 by the Emir of Minna, Dr. Umar Bahago, at NSP’s request, following widespread agitations by the host communities. He reiterated that the committee’s mandate is to meet twice annually to address community grievances, enhance dialogue, and foster mutual understanding between the dam management and the host communities. Hakimi commended the company for its CSR efforts and called for more people-oriented projects and employment opportunities for qualified youths from the host communities.
Alhaji Abdullahi Hassan, Consultant to North South Power Foundation (NSPF) on CSR, reassured the host communities of the company’s commitment to addressing their concerns. He appealed to community members to maintain open dialogue with the company regarding all issues affecting them.
In a goodwill message, Mr. Samuel Odekina, Acting Managing Director of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), praised NSP for organizing the meeting. He described it as a constructive platform for strengthening collaboration and ensuring peaceful engagement between the company and its host communities.
Dr. Sam Esumeh, Consultant, Public Relations to NSPF, presented various projects undertaken by the company in the past six months, which align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These projects span healthcare, water and sanitation, sustainable agriculture, humanitarian relief, education support, economic empowerment, and electrification in host communities.
