Post: Sierra Leonean Elected President of African Boxing Confederation


Freetown: In an unprecedented achievement for the nation’s sporting landscape, Mr. Solomon D. Kargbo was formally presented to the Minister of Sports as the newly elected President of the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC). The historic courtesy visit took place on January 7, 2026, at Bishop House in Freetown, led by the Sierra Leone Boxing Association.



According to Sierra Leone News Agency, Minister Augusta James-Teima celebrated the milestone, stating, “This is the first time Sierra Leone has produced a continental president in African boxing.” She emphasized the significance of Mr. Kargbo’s dual role as President of both the Sierra Leone Boxing Association and the AFBC, calling it a landmark moment for the country.



In her address, Minister Teima expressed profound pride in the achievement, linking it to decades of dedication within the sport. She noted that forty years of dedication is no small feat and highlighted the importance of hard work, focus, and commitment.



The Minister stressed the importance of unity within the sporting community for further progress. She assured that the achievement would be brought to the attention of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio as a development of national importance.



Minister Teima also encouraged other sporting disciplines to emulate boxing’s example, highlighting the importance of seriousness, passion, and resilience in overcoming challenges. She urged the boxing community to support President Kargbo, noting that his election reflects the confidence placed in him across Africa.



Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the Minister pledged collaboration with the National Sports Authority to advance boxing and enhance Sierra Leone’s presence in international competitions. She also announced an upcoming press conference to further amplify the news and emphasized that this achievement is significant not only for boxing but for Sierra Leone as a whole.
