Lagos: Smids Animation Studios and the National Theatre have joined forces to create opportunities for Nigerian children to develop cultural, creative, and digital skills, aiming to nurture a new generation of African storytellers. The organisations announced this partnership in a statement released by Smids in Lagos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the second edition of Toontopia, a children’s animation festival held recently at the renovated National Theatre, connected young participants with African narratives and opportunities within the creative industry. The National Theatre is now recognized as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Arts and Culture, and the collaboration seeks to expand access to animation, storytelling, and cultural education for children.
Mrs. Dami Solesi, Chief Executive Officer of Smids Animation Studios, emphasized that the initiative was designed to address gaps in children’s media consumption and promote stronger representation of African identities. She noted that it is uncommon for children to mention African or Nigerian animations when discussing their media preferences and stressed the importance of children remaining connected to their history and culture.
The festival offered screenings, workshops, and practical learning sessions to expose children to artistic expression and technical skills that could influence future career paths. Solesi highlighted that Toontopia has evolved beyond entertainment into a platform for exploring various creative disciplines while building confidence and self-expression.
Mrs. Tola Akerele, the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the National Theatre, stated that the partnership demonstrates the institution’s commitment to inclusive programming and deeper engagement with younger audiences. She noted that the number of participating children increased from 70 last year to 200 this year, reflecting the program’s growing impact. Akerele added that the initiative aligns with the National Theatre’s broader vision of promoting innovation, education, and family-oriented cultural experiences, with more child-focused activities planned for the future.
Mr. Taiwo Ala, Head of Product and Strategy at Stanbic IBTC Bank, emphasized the importance of supporting children’s development through creative learning as an investment in Nigeria’s future competitiveness. He remarked on the significance of directing children’s minds and energy towards acquiring skills that will enable them to compete globally in the future.
