South East governors reject ranching, call for restructuring

The South East Governors Forum at the end of their meeting held at the Lion Building, Government House Enugu on Sunday, resolved that the region does not have enough landmass and therefore cannot donate any for the use of ranching.

The forum warned detractors and mischief makers to know that no land in the south east region of Nigeria was or has been donated for that purpose.

The forum also noted that the federal government has not requested because they are aware that the region does not have enough landmass and therefore cannot request for any.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the meeting, the Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and governor of Ebonyi state, David Umahi said that ranching was not approved by the South East Governors Forum.

The south east landmass is not big enough for ranching so we have not donated, we have not been asked to donate and we have no intentions to donate. So ranching is not approved by the south east governor's forum Umahi reiterated.

Umahi also noted that Ndi Igbo stand on restructuring of Nigeria was presented to the forum by the President of Ohaneze based on the resolutions arising from the enlarged meeting of Ndi Igbo in Awka and reiterated the stand of the forum that restructuring was the only way forward for Nigeria. We shall take a studied look at the template of restructuring and will make our final stand clear by the next meeting of the forum Umahi noted.

The meeting also approved a partnership between the south east governors forum and E-Health Africa for health interventions and establishment of world class health facilities in all the 5 states of the region. It also set up a Health Consultative Committee comprising the state Commissioners for Health in the various states if the region with health experts and development partners to pursue health interventions in the south east zone of Nigeria.

We also approved to support the setting up of an Industrial and Infrastructural Development Bank to fast track capital flow for rapid development of the region, as a private initiative Umahi concluded.

Meanwhile, the South East Governors Forum in commiserating with the governor of Plateau state and her people over the recent killings, have noticed increased challenges in the movement of herdsmen from one state and region to another with resultant effect if massive destruction of farmland with attendant clashes with farmers.

South East Governors have been spending huge funds in settling farmers whose farms and crops are destroyed, we therefore, request for an emergency meeting in the south east with Federal security chiefs, farmers and herdsmen to stop the movements and prevent the clashes Umahi concluded.
