Abuja: Minister of Works, David Umahi, has stated that the South-East region of Nigeria must wait patiently for its chance to produce the country’s president, as it is not yet their turn. Umahi made this declaration during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the emphasis should be on political fairness and continuity in the upcoming 2027 elections. He highlighted the achievements of President Bola Tinubu since taking office in 2023 and argued that the presidency should remain with Tinubu for the full eight-year term. Umahi noted that the collective decision by the 17 Southern governors, prior to the 2023 elections, was to support a Southern candidate, and with Tinubu in office, it would be premature for the South-East to claim the presidency. He suggested that both the South-East and the North-East can vie for the position after 2031, ensuring equity and fairness in the political landscape.
Umahi acknowledged that the South-East has experienced marginalization in the past, which posed challenges during the 2023 general elections. NAN reported that the All Progressives Congress (APC) struggled in the region, securing only 5.85% of the votes. Umahi attributed this to past unfair treatment of the South-East but praised President Tinubu for his inclusive approach and infrastructure projects in the region.
He detailed significant ongoing infrastructure projects, including roads and bridges, funded by substantial investments, highlighting President Tinubu’s commitment to the South-East. Despite some funding challenges, Umahi assured that contractors are committed to completing these projects.
Umahi emphasized the importance of recognizing current realities and expressed gratitude for the development efforts of President Tinubu, urging the South-East to appreciate the ongoing progress and maintain sensitivity to the political context. He praised Tinubu’s contributions to the region and pointed out that his own role as Minister of Works is a significant appointment that benefits the entire country.
