The National Economic Council (NEC) has set a deadline of Monday, September 9th for four states that have not yet submitted their reports on the establishment of State police in Nigeria.
Following a meeting at the Council Chamber, State House, presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Oyo State Deputy Governor Abdulraheem Lawal briefed State House Correspondents on the council’s resolutions.
The council discussed the issue of State police in light of the recent security challenges affecting various regions of the country.
Lawal highlighted the importance of establishing a robust security system across the states, emphasizing that the consideration of State police was prompted by the security challenges in the Northeast, Northcentral, Southwest, Southeast, and South-south regions. He noted that last year, the NEC called for submissions from states regarding the establishment of State police, and although all states were scheduled to make their submissions, four states failed to do so.
Lawal caution
ed that the decisions of the Council on the establishment of State Police would be binding and enforced on the four states that did not submit their reports.
‘NEC has decided that those states must make their submissions on or before Monday, September 9th; otherwise, whatever decision NEC takes on the establishment of State police will be imposed on those states that refused to submit,’ Lawal stated.
The four states that are yet to submit their reports are Kwara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
It is worth recalling that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had previously agreed on the need to establish State police, as recommended by state governors, to address the country’s insecurity issues.
