Governor Darius Dickson Ishaku of Taraba State has called on farmers and herders in the state to strive to live peacefully with one another in the interest peace.
Speaking at the official distribution of cassava stems to farmers in Jalingo, Governor Ishaku admonished farmers and the entire people of the state, particularly the youths, to engage in agro-business so that collectively we would eradicate poverty among people of the state.
The governor said he was optimistic that the state would not only witness bumper harvest, but that the much expected peace would be restored in the state, if only farmers and herders heed to the call for peace.
Governor Ishaku said the state had procured over five million stems of the improve cassava verity for distribution to farmers across the state aimed at helping in boosting cassava farming in the state and also motivate many farmers to join the cassava farming business.
On his part, the Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Mr. Haruna Manu, said since the Nigerian Government was shifting attention from the oil sector, there was the need for the state to urgently begin to seek for alternative means of survival.
As the country is geared towards finding alternative to oil to save the nation’s dwindling economy, the state is committed towards reviving the agricultural and-sector with a view to improving the socio-economic development by of the state.
Mr. Manu said the state government had established three cassava processing plants in each of the three senatorial districts of the state, because it was satisfied with the performance of cassava farmers in the state last year.
He said the establishment of the plants was aimed at creating market for the finished products and also create the enabling environment for healthy competition among the cassava producers in the state.
The Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. David Ishaya Kassa, said the improved cassava stems were procured from the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan in Oyo state and that the gesture would turn around the fortunes of the farmers across the state.
This year to commensurate with the efforts of the state government in this direction.
He charged the beneficiaries to judiciously make use of the stems by using them and not selling them.
Some of the beneficiaries said the gesture of the state government would go a long way in creating employment for the teaming youths of the state, while reiterating their readiness to apply the stems in order to yield the much expected results.
