Abuja:The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has called for the implementation of a housing scheme to improve the living conditions of teachers. This appeal was made by ASUSS FCT Chairman, Mr. Julius Ogundiran, during the national celebration of World Teachers’ Day 2026.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ogundiran praised the educational reforms initiated by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike but highlighted that high housing costs have led many educators to commute long distances or resort to sleeping in classrooms. He emphasized the vital connection between teacher welfare, national stability, and the future of education in Nigeria.
Ogundiran pointed out that while salaries are paid promptly, the lack of affordable housing remains a significant issue affecting teacher morale. He urged the FCT leadership to consider constructing housing estates or providing subsidized land for teachers to improve their living conditions.
Mrs. Grace Philip, a teacher at Junior Secondary School, Tungan Maje, echoed the need for better support for teachers, citing delays in promotions and a general sense of being undervalued.
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Bagudu, represented by Mrs. Kikelomo Ogundele, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing teacher welfare and educational funding. He stressed the importance of investing in education as crucial for Nigeria’s future, emphasizing that teachers play a foundational role in national development.
Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Oluwaseun Falaye of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, urged leaders to prioritize ethical conduct and accountability, recognizing the significant role teachers play beyond classroom instruction in shaping society.
