Post: Tinubu Inaugurates Housing Units for Federal High Court Judges, Strengthening Nigeria’s Judicial Pillar

Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has announced the inauguration of 10 housing units for judges of the Federal High Court, a move aimed at reinforcing the judiciary as a vital pillar of Nigerian democracy. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu highlighted the administration’s commitment during the inauguration ceremony held at the newly constructed Judges’ Quarters in Katampe District.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Tinubu emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader agenda to secure institutional trust and uphold the rule of law in Nigeria. The president stated, “We are here not just to commission buildings but to fortify a vital pillar of our democracy – the judiciary.” He elaborated on the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to revive institutional trust and ensure that the judiciary operates independently and securely.

Tinubu pointed out that for too long, the independence of the judiciary has been discussed in abstract terms, and now is the time to provide judges with the necessary environment to dispense justice without fear or favor. He stated that true judicial independence is rooted in the dignity of judicial officers, and providing these residential quarters ensures that judges operate from a place of security, comfort, and stability.

The president further highlighted that the Renewed Hope Agenda is anchored on equity and justice, calling for a commitment to the swift, fair, and transparent dispensation of justice. He expressed hopes that the new homes would be centers of deep reflection and integrity, strengthening Nigeria’s democratic fabric.

Tinubu also acknowledged the ongoing reforms across various sectors in Nigeria, noting that while the results are beginning to show, there is still work to be done. He commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, for his dedication and high-quality delivery of the housing project.

In his remarks, Wike emphasized that the effort underscores Tinubu’s commitment to an independent judiciary. Highlighting previous initiatives, he stated, “Yesterday, we inaugurated the Court of Appeal Judges’ Quarters. Today, we are here for the Federal High Court, and in July, we will inaugurate the housing units for the FCT High Court.”

Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, noted the longstanding accommodation challenges faced by judges and commended Tinubu and Wike for taking bold steps to address these issues. He emphasized that improving the welfare of judicial officers is crucial for the stability and effectiveness of the judiciary.

Earlier, Mr. Richard Dauda, acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, provided details about the project. He mentioned that the project was awarded in September 2024 and includes the construction of 40 Judges’ Quarters at Katampe District, with 10 houses specifically designated for judges of the Court of Appeal. The project features fully furnished 5-bedroom duplexes with additional facilities.
