Abuja: President Bola Tinubu, Mr. Peter Obi, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki have collectively urged leaders from various sectors to focus on legacy-building by leading impactful lives that can inspire future generations. They delivered these remarks during a book presentation in Abuja honoring Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event marked the launch of ‘The Chronicles of a Legend,’ a book celebrating Igbinedion’s life, achievements, and significant contributions to society. President Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. George Akume, praised Igbinedion as a noble figure whose influence spans generations, sectors, and cultures. “This book is more than a biography. It is a compendium of resilience, innovation, patriotism, and service,” he stated.
Tinubu highlighted Igbinedion’s pioneering efforts in founding Okada Air, one of Nigeria’s earliest indigenous airlines, as a source of national pride and a catalyst for job creation and entrepreneurship. He also noted the establishment of Igbinedion University, Nigeria’s first private university, as a testament to Igbinedion’s commitment to education and intellectual growth. Tinubu acknowledged Igbinedion’s influence in governance through his son, Lucky Igbinedion, a former Governor of Edo State, and commended his role in preserving Benin culture and values.
Mr. Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, underscored the importance of integrity, visionary leadership, and service to humanity as foundational elements of a meaningful legacy. He expressed concern over the lack of recognition for deserving individuals like Igbinedion, who launched Nigeria’s first private university and indigenous airline, and was among the first to obtain a banking license. Obi lamented the absence of representatives from the Ministry of Education or Transport at the event and emphasized the importance of a productive economy where citizens could contribute to national development.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki echoed these sentiments, urging current leaders to emulate Igbinedion’s example and live lives that inspire youth, shape decisions, and improve society. He stressed the need for leaders to serve as role models for future generations.
Mr. Lucky Igbinedion, the former Governor of Edo State and son of the honoree, described the 256-page, 16-chapter book as an inspiration for current and future leaders to live impactful lives. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Mr. James Ibori, former Governor of Delta State; Mr. Dennis Idahosa, Deputy Governor of Edo State; former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim; and various royal fathers and traditional rulers from across Nigeria.
