Abuja: President Bola Tinubu has ordered a full and transparent investigation into the death of suspected illegal miners detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger. The detainees were arrested during enforcement operations around Lt.-Gen. Mohammed Inuwa Wushishi Estate in Minna over allegations of illegal mining. Tinubu emphasized that the life of every Nigerian mattered and that no citizen should die in government custody due to negligence, abuse, or inhumane treatment.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, highlighted the President’s deep concern over the reported deaths, describing the situation as ‘a grave matter requiring urgent investigation and accountability.’ While the Federal Government is committed to combating illegal mining and other criminal activities, Tinubu stressed that enforcement operations must be conducted lawfully and with respect for the dignity and fundamental rights of every individual in custody.
Tinubu made it clear that the Federal Government would not tolerate unprofessionalism or negligence by law enforcement agencies. He warned against mass deaths resulting from official negligence or failure by public officials to protect lives in their care. The President stated that any official found to have contributed to these deaths through action, abuse, or negligence must be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.
The President also directed relevant authorities to ensure a comprehensive, transparent, and unhindered investigation. The probe must cover the circumstances of the arrests, the condition of the detainees upon custody, detention conditions, medical attention provided, and events leading to the reported deaths. Tinubu asserted that the suspension of officers is only an administrative measure and should not replace proper determination of criminal responsibility if the evidence warrants prosecution.
Additionally, the President directed the Ministry of Interior and NSCDC leadership to cooperate fully with relevant investigative authorities. He emphasized that no officer should interfere with the process or attempt to obstruct efforts to uncover the truth. Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls, urging affected families and communities to remain calm while assuring them that the Federal Government would pursue the truth.
Tinubu reiterated that appropriate action would be taken based on credible evidence from the investigation. He stressed that the government must enforce the law firmly but also obey it, underscoring the non-negotiable sanctity of human life. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 37 artisanal miners died in NSCDC custody in Minna following recent enforcement operations in parts of Niger. The agency also reports that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, ordered the immediate suspension of the NSCDC Commandant in Niger, Suberu Aniviye, over the incident.
