Abuja: The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil is set to unlock economic opportunities and amplify Nigeria’s global influence on behalf of Africa. In an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Idris highlighted the strategic importance of Tinubu’s presence in Brazil, viewing it as a catalyst for other African nations.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Idris emphasized that Tinubu’s visit was not solely for Nigeria’s benefit but served as a platform for the continent as a whole. “When President Tinubu speaks, he speaks for the continent. Nigeria is a continental and global leader,” he asserted. This visit marks the fourth meeting between Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz In¡cio Lula da Silva, underscoring the strategic depth of their partnership. Idris described it as a reconnection of two great nations with profound historical, cultural, and economic ties.
Idris revealed that five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed in crucial sectors: Foreign Affairs, Aviation, Science and Technology, Agriculture, and Cultural Exchange. These agreements are already delivering tangible benefits and are expected to catalyze long-term cooperation and investment between Nigeria and Brazil. A significant development is the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA), which facilitates direct commercial flights between the two countries. An inaugural symbolic flight by Nigerian carrier Air Peace departed from Braslia to Lagos, significantly reducing travel time between Abuja and Braslia from over 24 hours to just seven.
The visit also carries significant historical and emotional weight, given Brazil’s deep African roots and the centuries-old transatlantic slave trade connections. Idris described the visit as more than just a state visit, but a symbolic healing of historical wounds. “It’s about cultural reconnection, economic collaboration, and redefining our shared future,” he stated. The minister reiterated that Nigeria’s leadership role on the global stage is further solidified through this engagement.
