Abuja: The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has called upon senior officers of the four Paramilitary agencies under the Ministry to foster a culture of innovation, discipline, and knowledge-driven leadership within their organizations. During a capacity development workshop on Performance Management System (PMS) in Abuja, the minister highlighted the shift from promotions based solely on rank and longevity to those requiring proven innovation and leadership.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of continuous learning for officers, urging them to stay abreast of modern practices and technologies. He pointed out that past methods were insufficient for addressing future challenges and encouraged leaders to be receptive to ideas from junior officers, as knowledge is not exclusive to a few.
Dr Tunji-Ojo stressed the implications of public decisions on millions of Nigerians, highlighting the need for well-informed and strategic choices by security leaders to maintain national safety and welfare. He underscored the government’s role in training officers to ensure competent service delivery, mentioning plans to reward officers who demonstrate innovation and efficiency.
The Minister praised the intellectual caliber of Nigeria’s paramilitary workforce and encouraged Comptroller-Generals to welcome constructive feedback. He urged officers to disseminate the training to subordinates, emphasizing the longevity of institutions over individuals.
In a goodwill message, Mr Sylvester Nwakuche, the Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), commended the Ministry of Interior for its commitment to performance-driven reforms. He lauded the minister’s leadership and dedication to enhancing systems, accountability, and results delivery in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Nwakuche highlighted that the PMS training is crucial for achieving institutional excellence, transforming performance evaluation into a process of growth and measurable outcomes. He encouraged participants to fully engage with the training and apply the lessons learned to improve planning, execution, and results delivery in their roles.
Other leaders across the paramilitary agencies pledged their support for the Tinubu administration to ensure effective service delivery nationwide. The training was organized for officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Correctional Service, and Federal Fire Service.
