UMTH urges Nigerians to utilize adequate medical facilities

The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), has urged Nigerians to take good advantage of the standard and adequate medical facilities in the country instead of travelling abroad for treatments.

Chief Medical Director of the University’s Teaching Hospital in Borno State, Professor Ahmed Ahidjoa who is also a Professor in Intervention radiology stated this during an interactive session with Voice of Nigeria.

Professor Ahidjoa said that so many people believe in travelling abroad before they can get proper medical attention, which he said should not be so.

”There are some patients with genuine medical complications which we sometimes refer them to a more qualified and equipped hospital across the world.

Meanwhile, some feel they have the capacity to go around, and you can’t stop them but I urge all Nigerians to utilize Nigerian hospitals, we have all it takes.

Professor Ahidjoa: Among the major departments we have is the department of surgery with over 30 consultants, department of obstetrics and gynecology with 10 consultants and many residence doctors and nurses.”

He added: ”We also have specialized department with sub specialties, like ear, nose, and throat, which has 6 consultants,; a department of Ophthalmology which only care for the eye. Department of Orthopedic surgery only deals with diseases of the bone and trauma.

Department of anesthesia with consultants in charge of making a patient to sleep for operation, we have diagnostic department, like mine; the department of radiology, Ultra sound, X-ray, CT scan and so on.”

UMTH is the first center in Nigeria to do interventional radiology with a lot of other departments fully equipped laboratories with qualified doctors.

It also provides primary healthcare services, with comprehensive healthcare Centers located in Banki, Madagali, Potiskum, and even within Maiduguri.

The CMD mentioned that about 3000 staff and the monthly running of the Hospital is sufficiently financed by the federal government.

Usually they are recognized ways in which this hospital is financed; the monthly wages comes from the federal government. Money also comes in for capital projects, and for overhead cost, the running cost of the hospital for the stationeries, water bills, electric bill, and travel allowances.”

The IGR is generated by the hospital; it is the money paid by the patient for the services given to them.

We are not aiming to make money from the patient; we run what is called the revolving fund scheme, he said.

Professor Ahmed encouraged private organizations to invest in the teaching hospital.

The hospital is faced with financial constraint, the government alone can’t resolve all our financial demand that’s why we call on the private organizations and individuals for donation and contributions.

I know an individual who donated a machine worth 200 million naira in Kano, also in Ibadan a SAN donated a whole building fully furnished.

Other major problem here is the accident and emergency care unit, the unit is so small it has only six bed size rooms. But we recently got an approval to build and construct a 130 bed size rooms for accident and emergency unit alone, this could solve a lot of problem.

I truly appreciate the federal government effort, but I’m still appealing for more fund to furnish and equip it to its standard, it is a complex structure which has a heli-part for helicopters, in case of any emergency situation. It has ICU unit of its own, with four operation theatre rooms and a laboratory attached.
