Victory over insurgency will aid economic recovery- Baraje

Former Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC),Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, has said the nation’s breakthrough in the war against terror will have desirable impact on the economy.

He said the victory will bring about economic recovery, currently in recession, if well managed.

Speaking with Journalists in Ilorin, Alhaji Baraje hailed the diligence and resilience of the nation’s armed forces in dislodging the remnants of boko haram fighters from Sambisa Forest in Borno State.

He stated that it was cheering that the troops took over the hideout of the terrorists widely believed to be the most dreadful among the dens of the outlawed sect.

Alhaji Baraje said the military, which was saddled with the responsibility of protecting territorial integrity of the nation, had significantly restored peace in the country.

He therefore noted that the battle against insurgency cannot be totally won, pointing out that there is likelihood of the insurgents committing pocket of attacks on innocent Nigerians.

Our men in uniform, particularly the army have done us proud. Their major duty is to defend the territorial integrity of the country, and that is exactly what they have done on our behalf. They have brought peace to the land, and we can never thank them enough.

Even before today, they have been spending sleepless nights under very harsh condition, we quite appreciate them. And we believe that this is beginning of many good things to come. In fact, this is the beginning of overcoming the (economic) recession.

This is a war against insurgency, and this war is very technical and tactical. If I say we have finally won it, am not in the best position to say that. I’m not in the military, and apart from that, from the little that I know of war of insurgency from history, it doesn’t just end once and for all in that way.

Occasionally, you have pocket of strikes here and there. But what matters, is that the core people (the insurgents) have been dislodged and so we can go to sleep, Alhaji Baraje said.

Fielding question on the 2017 budget, the APC leader said Nigerians will have cause to smile by the time the fiscal year was being implemented after the consideration by the National Assembly.

What we should expect is many good things to come as contain in the budget. And I believe by the time the National Assembly works on the budget, we shall have the details and cause to smile, he said.
