Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo is presiding over a virtual meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC, in Abuja.
The meeting which is the 4th in 2020 had the Governors of Nigeria’s 36 states participating virtually from their states.
It is expected that the Covid-19 pandemic and measures being taken to contain its spread in Nigeria will dominate deliberations at the meeting.
At its last meeting on the 19th of March, the Council had set up a special committee to co-ordinate the responses of the Nigerian and state governments to the Covid-19 and to determine its implication for the economy.
The committee, chaired by the Vice President, has been holding virtual meetings since President Muhammadu Buhari announced a lockdown of Lagos and Ogun States as well as the Federal Capital Territory in March as Nigeria intensified measures to contain the spread of the virus.
The committee, which has the governors of Jigawa, Ebonyi, Edo, Nassarawa, Kebbi, Kaduna and Ogun as members, may present its report at Thursday’s NEC, where issues such as inter-state travels might be discussed.
Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, is also physically present at the meeting.
