Five time champion Venus Williams on Friday beat Japanese teenager Naomi Osaka in two straight sets to reach the fourth round of the Wimbledon championships.
The 19 year old Osaka who was not yet born when Williams made her Wimbledon debut in 1997 stretched her a lot.
But the 37 year old benefitted from experience to win 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 in one hour and 25 minutes.
The American who is the event’s 10th seed has thus reached the last 16 at Wimbledon for the 15th time.
She will next face another 19 year-old, Ana Konjuh who was also not born when Williams made her Wimbledon debut, for a place in the quarter-finals.
The Croat is the youngest player into the fourth round of the women’s singles draw after beating Slovakian eighth seed Dominika Cibulkova 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-4.
