Women farmers urged to embrace new farming technologies

Mrs Fumiko Iseki, the Executive Director, Sasakawa Global 2000, has advised women farmers in Kano State to embrace the new farming technologies to boost food production across the state.

Iseki gave the advice while addressing women farmers’ groups at Tashar Amarya village in Rano Local Government Area of the state on Monday.

The Japan-based Sasakawa Global (SG) 2000 officials are in Kano State to meet with beneficiaries of the various intervention programmes as well as key partners of the organisation.

The executive director said the SG 2000 programmes were aimed at improving the productivity and profitability of smallholder farmers by encouraging them to adopt higher-yielding varieties and enhanced production practices.

We appreciate the farmers’ willingness and readiness to change their lives by accepting to take the advice given to them by the extension workers.

Nigeria is one of our priority countries so as to ensure its development by promoting agricultural production in the country and Africa as a whole,SG 2000 official said.

She said the SG 2000 and other agricultural development agencies in Kano State would continue to support the existing partnership for the benefit of small holder farmers in the country.

The County Director of Sasakawa Global 2000, Prof Sani Ahmed-Miko, said the NEW maize seed variety ‘SAMMAZ-50’ was developed by the Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Ahmed-Miko said the SG 2000 had distributed it to some farmers for demonstration purpose with a view to assessing its high yielding potential for massive production of the commodity in the country.

The two SG 2000 Directors and other officials were in the area to meet with Key partners of the organisation in Nigeria.

NAN also reports that the SG 2000 team had inspected the Rice milling plant at Bunkure Local Government Area of the state where it held discussion with the Women Rice Processors Associations.
