Yakubu Steps Down as INEC Chairman to Facilitate Smooth Transition

Abuja: Prof. Mahmmood Yakubu has announced his decision to step down as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow for the appointment of a new leader. This decision was revealed during a brief handover ceremony at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where he transferred responsibilities to Ms. May Agbamuche-Mbu, a national commissioner, who will serve as acting Chairman.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Yakubu emphasized that his decision was in compliance with the provisions of Section 36, Subsections 1 and 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended. He noted that stepping down would enable the incoming chairman to quickly adapt and manage the complex task of conducting elections and other electoral activities in Nigeria, a country with vast demographic and logistical challenges.

Yakubu expressed gratitude to his colleagues, acknowledging the support from 24 national commissioners and 67 Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) during his 10-year tenure. He highlighted the collaborative efforts that led to innovations and effective management of INEC’s responsibilities, despite facing substantial challenges. He also appreciated the backing from various stakeholders, including the National Assembly, political parties, civil society, and media, which were crucial in the commission’s success.

Under Yakubu’s leadership, INEC made significant advancements, including the consolidation of the biometric voter register and transitioning from manual processes to digital platforms for various electoral procedures. These improvements included the nomination of candidates, accreditation of observers, and election result management, which were facilitated by the introduction of new technologies.

Despite the progress, Yakubu acknowledged that more work remains. The commission is preparing for upcoming elections, including the Anambra governorship election and the 2027 general elections. Additionally, the enactment of a new Electoral Act is anticipated, which will necessitate further revisions of INEC’s regulations and guidelines.

In her response, acting INEC chairman Agbamuche-Mbu commended Yakubu’s contributions and achievements, expressing confidence that the commission under her leadership would continue to uphold the standards set by Yakubu. She pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the commission’s continued success and growth.

The handover ceremony concluded with the presentation of two books authored by Yakubu, documenting the electoral management and technology advancements from 2015 to 2025, and the signing of the official handover notes to Agbamuche-Mbu.
