Awka, July 15, 2021 (MOI) Anambra students have been urged to cultivate the habit of daily record-keeping of their experiences and impressions if they are to enhance their writing skills and become better writers in the future.
Prof Kate Omenugha, Commissioner for Basic Education made the observation during an interactive session with members of Educational ICON Awards Nigeria, Anambra State chapter at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat Complex, Awka.
Addressing members of the association who were on a familiarisation tour to the Ministry, the commissioner said that one secret to overcoming the challenge of knowing how to write was by keeping a diary, where one could write down on daily basis impressions, thoughts, and experiences.
According to the commissioner, learning is limited to the classroom but can be acquired anywhere other than the school environment.
“Effective learning can go on in unofficial settings or during outdoor activities like singing, dancing, debate, camping and the like,’’ she added.
Prof. Omenugha, then, called on students to make use of every opportunity they find outside the classroom to add to their wealth of knowledge and also strengthen their natural flair and talents.
Meanwhile, the Coordinator of Educational Icons, Anambra State, Mr Mike C Nebo noted that the body used the opportunity provided during the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown of schools to introduce some competitions.
He said that the students engaged in essay writing, drawing, debating and singing in competitions, stressing that no fewer than 3,000 students from the public and private schools under Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), participated in the competition.
The competitions also featured impromptu speech-making and singing by the students.
The group and the schools in attendance later took photographs with the commissioner and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic Education, Dr Nwando Obiano.
Some of the schools present at the occasion include the Handmaids Infant Nursery and Primary School, Awka, Ado Girls’ Secondary School, Onitsha, and Eagle Power College. Educational ICON Awards is an award that recognises educational icons who have contributed immensely toward the general development and advancement of education in the state and beyond.
