Abuja: Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on civil society organisations (CSOs) to remain steadfast in defending democratic values and promoting national development. Akpabio made this appeal during the 1st Civil Society Summit on Civil Democracy and National Development held in Abuja. The event focused on the theme: ‘Civil Society, Democracy and Governance Reforms: Building Sustainable Partnerships for National Development.’
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the senate president, represented by Sen. Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, highlighted the crucial role civil society plays in upholding order and the rule of law. He emphasized the importance of CSOs standing with reason and institutional honor, particularly when democracy faces challenges.
Sen. Shehu Sani, a human rights activist, also addressed the summit, urging civil society to take on a strategic and professional role within the democratic framework. Sani emphasized that CSOs should not be seen as adversaries but as active and informed partners in governance. He encouraged civil society to engage with facts and institutional realities, advocating for policies through research and a deep understanding of public policy.
Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Sunday Dare, underscored the need for civil society to focus on constructive engagement rather than agitation. He stressed the importance of CSOs in educating and informing citizens to build trust between the state and its people, highlighting their role as translators of government policy.
Legal practitioner Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo called for unity among civil society organisations, urging them to move from passive consultation to active collaboration. He advocated for strategic partnerships between civic groups and government institutions to achieve meaningful reforms.
Blessing Akinlosotu, Executive Director of the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN), reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to ideals such as patriotism, accountability, and good governance advocacy. The summit provided a platform for cross-sector dialogue on democratic accountability, civic engagement, and inclusive national development.
