Abuja: Some educationists have advocated increased private sector investment in free education for children of underserved communities in the country. They made the call at the 2025 graduation ceremony of the Not Forgotten Initiative (NFI) School in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the NFI operates in a makeshift structure where indigent children receive free education, uniforms, and lunch, financed by private individuals and partners. NAN reports that the school was inaugurated in 2018 with 14 pupils and now has 109 pupils with seven classrooms, a library, a computer laboratory, a music room, a hall, and other facilities.
In an interview with NAN, Rev. Fr. George Ehusani, the Founder of Lux Terra Leadership Foundation, emphasized the need for multiple initiatives where individuals invest in the future of Nigeria. He highlighted the limited support from the government and applauded the efforts of those taking responsibility for educating vulnerable children who could otherwise be drawn into negative influences.
Mr. Ade Adedotun, a supporter of the initiative, noted that government efforts alone are insufficient to provide access to education for all, stressing the importance of initiatives like NFI for underserved communities. He praised the program for enabling children from disadvantaged backgrounds to access quality education, which is crucial for social mobility.
Ms. Funke Abegunde, a U.S. certified educator, asserted that despite offering free education, the NFI school maintains world-class standards in curriculum, resources, and teacher training. She encouraged graduating pupils to continue striving for excellence, emphasizing the role of education as a key to future opportunities.
Parents expressed their gratitude to the NFI. Mrs. Clementina Dageyi shared her appreciation for the support the school provides, not only in education but also in caring for the children’s overall well-being. Ms. Munirat Muhammed also expressed her happiness with the school’s impact on her wards.
The Founder of NFI schools, Mrs. Tosin Adeniyi, acknowledged the partners who believe in investing in every child’s future. She outlined the school’s achievements, including the enrollment of 111 pupils, scholarships for secondary education, and the success of students who have progressed to higher education levels.
