Post: Anambra First Lady Calls for Early Detection to Combat Breast Cancer

Anambra: The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has urged women to prioritise early detection and regular screening in the fight against breast cancer. Dr Soludo described the disease as a ‘generational threat’ to women’s health worldwide.

According to Voice of Nigeria, Dr. Soludo released a statement during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, encouraging women to engage in routine self-examinations and undergo regular screenings at certified medical facilities. The Governor’s wife emphasized that early diagnosis significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival. She called on communities and healthcare stakeholders to intensify awareness campaigns and support systems for women.

The global health campaign, observed every October, aims to promote education, awareness, and action against breast cancer. Dr. Soludo stated that October is a critical period dedicated to educating people about the dangers of breast cancer and methods of prevention. She urged that beyond the annual commemoration, the real and present danger breast cancer poses should be recognized.

Leading the wellness-focused initiative Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, the First Lady highlighted alarming statistics reflecting high mortality rates associated with late-stage breast cancer diagnoses. She urged for intensified efforts to promote early testing and lifestyle changes that could lower cancer risks. Dr. Soludo stressed that learning how to conduct self-exams and going for regular medical checks are crucial steps that can save lives.

Dr. Soludo also called on governments at all levels, healthcare providers, civil society, and the media to expand awareness campaigns, especially in underserved communities. She stressed the importance of spreading awareness to combat this deadly disease.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is highlighted as one of the most effective ways to reduce cancer risk, aligning with global recommendations from organizations like the World Health Organisation (WHO). According to WHO, breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor that can become life-threatening if not detected and treated early. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women.

As awareness efforts intensify globally this October, advocates like Dr. Soludo continue to emphasize that knowledge, vigilance, and proactive healthcare are vital in reducing the disease’s burden.
