Post: APC Group Advocates for Clear Sector-Specific Climate Action

Abuja: The All Progressives Congress Climate Change Network (ACCN) has urged the ruling party to establish a clear, concise, sector-specific climate action plan to bolster Nigeria’s response to the global climate crisis. Dr Greg Odogwu, National Coordinator of ACCN, emphasized this need during his remarks at the inaugural Climate Policy Dialogue organized by the group.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the dialogue, themed ‘Exploring Options for Electoral Capture of Green Voters,’ highlighted the network’s role as a climate arm within the ruling party. This initiative aims to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change in Nigeria. Odogwu stressed the necessity of guiding the party and the nation toward climate-smart solutions, advocating for actions like flood prevention and sustainable food production.

The coordinator announced intentions to present 95 recommendations to the APC leadership, known as the ’95 Theses,’ to be included in the party’s ongoing constitutional amendment process. He argued for the establishment of a constitutionally recognized climate wing within the party.

Dr Murtala Mohammed, an environmental expert, also spoke at the event, calling for political commitment to address climate change issues in Nigeria. He emphasized the need to integrate climate action into party agendas and governance structures, proposing three pathways for Nigeria’s climate response. These include embedding green growth into political manifestos, mobilizing communities, and building capacity for innovative policies.

Hamzat Lawal, Founder of Connected Development (CODE) and Chairman of the Advisory Board, ACCN, highlighted the platform’s timeliness in fostering climate action within the government. He expressed optimism that the dialogue would shape a comprehensive climate agenda that could inspire Nigeria and other African nations.
