Post: APWEN Calls on Women Engineers to Prioritize Health Screenings

Lagos: The Lagos Chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has urged its members to prioritize regular health screenings and wellness practices to mitigate occupational health risks. This call to action was made during a virtual lecture held in celebration of World Health Day 2026, under the theme ‘Together for Health, Stand with Science’.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Oluwabunmi Fatungase, Chief Medical Director at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, highlighted the increasing health risks faced by female engineers due to sedentary lifestyles, stress, and environmental exposure. She identified non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and breast and cervical cancers as major concerns, emphasizing the importance of early detection through routine check-ups.

Dr. Fatungase advised women to begin regular health screenings from the age of 20 to enhance early diagnosis and prevention outcomes. She recommended that procedures like Pap smears be conducted every three years for those without risk factors, while mammograms should commence at age 40. Additionally, she underscored the importance of mental health, urging women in male-dominated fields to seek support systems and professional help when necessary.

In her welcoming address, Chairperson Mrs. Bosede Oyekunle stated that the purpose of the lecture was to promote health awareness and evidence-based practices among members. Oyekunle noted that the program included a safety session on workplace ergonomics and discussions on balancing work demands with personal health.

Participants were encouraged to advocate for workplace wellness programs, organize group screenings for affordability, and adopt healthier lifestyles despite their demanding schedules. The event also featured light fitness activities such as aerobics and dancing, led by fitness consultant Mr. Daniel Ufeza, to promote physical well-being.
