Post: ASUSS Initiates Ethics and Training Drive to Elevate Teaching Profession

Abuja:The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) is taking steps to embed professional ethics and continuous training to restore societal respect for the teaching profession.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, ASUSS National President, Mr. Sola Adigun, emphasized the importance of this initiative during the union’s 3rd national workshop held in Abuja. This event, themed ‘The Impact of Ethics and Attitudinal Change in Managerial Leadership,’ is part of ASUSS’s activities commemorating the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.

Adigun highlighted the need for a shift from merely appreciating teachers annually to providing actionable capacity-building programs aimed at enhancing teachers’ skills to meet modern educational demands. He noted that this initiative is driven by a need for self-evaluation within the union and the education sector at large.

Reflecting on his previous tenure as Secretary-General, Adigun addressed ethical shortcomings observed during nationwide visits, emphasizing the necessity of strong ethical standards and knowledge upgrades. This led to the establishment of the annual workshop series, which is now in its third edition.

ASUSS also aims to advocate for members’ welfare and drive societal transformation through quality education. The union prioritizes executive and managerial training for its leaders to promote effective management practices in classrooms.

Mr. Julius Ogundiran, Chairman of ASUSS in the FCT, commended the workshop’s organization, highlighting its significance in enhancing teachers’ leadership and accountability skills.

Dr. Adeola Faleye, the lead speaker and Associate Professor at Obafemi Awolowo University, stressed the importance of maintaining professional ethics to improve teachers’ public image. She encouraged educators to uphold integrity and accountability.

Additionally, Mr. Samuel Ojo from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, advocated for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, describing it as both an opportunity and a responsibility to improve teaching and learning processes.
