Post: BRICS Experience Key to Shaping Post-2030 Sustainable Development Agenda


Abuja:A Russian official has emphasized the potential of BRICS countries’ experiences to influence the formation of a unified sustainable development agenda beyond 2030. Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organisations at the Russian Foreign Ministry, highlighted this during the BRICS Dialogue programme.



According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Logvinov noted Russia’s achievements in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the eradication of extreme poverty and reducing food shortages to zero. He reported a 33.8 percent decrease in mortality among children under five from 2015 to 2023 and stated that the entire Russian population now has access to electricity, with 99.5 percent using clean fuels and technologies.



Logvinov stressed that the collective experience of BRICS countries could act as a catalyst for developing post-2030 strategies. He pointed out that energy cooperation is a significant area of collaboration, with member countries developing approaches for a just energy transition through the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform. He mentioned that Russia has been sharing energy technologies, including the design and modernization of hydropower plants in India, Indonesia, and Ethiopia, along with using Russian nuclear technologies in China, India, Egypt, and Iran, with new projects planned in Ethiopia and Indonesia.



The official also mentioned various Russian initiatives supporting the SDGs, such as the national project ‘Family,’ indexation of maternity capital, and the extension of the family mortgage programme. He highlighted a concept approved for persons with disabilities, aiming for a 75 percent employment rate among them by 2030. Additionally, the ‘Infrastructure for Life’ project aims to improve living conditions across 2,000 settlements.



Logvinov concluded by affirming the United Nations’ critical role in exchanging development experiences and noted Russia’s participation in international conferences on development financing, including the Monterrey Consensus, Addis Ababa Action Agenda, and Sevilla Commitment.
