Abuja: The National Youth Political Coalition (NYPC) has announced its support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid, contingent on the administration’s commitment to enhancing policy implementation, job creation, security improvements, and the delivery of programs that benefit Nigerians. This statement was made by the coalition’s Chairman, Charles Dagana, during the National Press Conference held in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dagana emphasized that the coalition’s decision is based on its evaluation of the administration’s performance and its commitment to continue reforms aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians, especially the youth. He acknowledged the government’s progress in economic reforms, infrastructure development, and security but highlighted the need for further action to tackle the economic challenges, high living costs, and unemployment facing the nation.
Dagana stressed that while the coalition recognizes the complexity of governing a nation like Nigeria, its support is conditional upon the government’s focus on more robust policy implementation, the creation of youth-oriented economic opportunities, enhanced security measures, and the assurance that government programs reach the grassroots. He called on federal and state governments, as well as relevant agencies, to ensure that policies introduced under the Tinubu administration are effectively executed.
The coalition chairman also reiterated support for the proposed establishment of state police, labeling it a crucial move to address Nigeria’s security issues. Additionally, he advocated for the creation of a Physical Development Commission (PDC) to oversee government-funded infrastructure projects nationwide, which he believes would enhance accountability and ensure that development extends to rural communities.
Hon. Usman Shagari, the Convener of the coalition and National Speaker of the National Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN), echoed these sentiments, urging the government to prioritize job creation for young people, invest in education, technology, innovation, and agriculture, as well as accelerate infrastructure development. Shagari emphasized the coalition’s independence and its readiness to support any political entity that champions youth empowerment, good governance, national unity, and economic progress.
Shagari also highlighted the importance of a strong opposition in democracy, one that provides solutions rather than mere criticism. He expressed the coalition’s expectation that public officials exhibit transparency, accountability, and a results-oriented approach in their duties. He welcomed the passage of the State Police Bill and called for its effective implementation, alongside the establishment of commissions focused on physical development, women’s rights, and youth development.
Furthermore, Aisha Yusuf, the National Women Leader of the coalition, underscored the coalition’s dedication to promoting women’s empowerment and inclusion in national development. She stressed the significance of giving women equal opportunities to contribute to the nation’s progress. Yusuf remarked on the readiness and potential of Nigerian youths to contribute their energy, innovation, and creativity toward building a stronger nation, advocating for a Women Rights Commission to bolster the protection and advancement of women’s rights.
Lastly, Solomon Fayese, the National Publicity Secretary, praised the proposed establishment of state police as a measure to enhance national security. He urged legislative bodies to facilitate the seamless passage and implementation of this constitutional amendment. However, Fayese expressed concern over the insufficient impact made by some youth political appointees, noting the need for tangible results that improve the lives of young Nigerians.
