Abuja: An expert on power, Mr. Ayotomiwa Adekahunsi, has stated that consumers are willing to pay for electricity consumed if they are metered transparently. Adekahunsi, the Chief Executive Officer of Q-Tech Nigeria Limited, highlighted this finding in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Adekahunsi revealed that poor metering has been a persistent challenge in the country’s power sector. “The survey revealed that a lot of consumers are willing to pay their bills if the metering system is made more transparent and accurate. This means that the payment can only be done if the consumers are appropriately metered,” he explained. He emphasized that accurate metering is crucial for securing revenue within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), where liquidity remains a significant issue.
Adekahunsi further noted that accurate metering would allow Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) and the government to secure revenue and improve the power supply in Nigeria. He mentioned that Q-Tech had deployed smart meters to some DisCos and that the company primarily targets government and large corporate entities. He pointed out that technical and commercial losses often arise from sub-segments of customers, including government or large corporate organizations.
He explained that by using powerful software and analytics applications, adequate metering could track and secure revenue for both DisCos and the government. This approach applies to government organizations and corporate entities, as smart meters provide visibility into consumption, usage, payment, and billing.
Adekahunsi elaborated on Q-Tech’s initiative, which offers a transparent platform called ‘power track.’ This platform allows consumers to see their daily and monthly usage, moving away from the traditional opaque billing system. He stressed that as Nigeria’s energy landscape evolves, demand is shifting towards smarter technologies that enhance efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
He concluded by stating that Q-Tech is committed to addressing liquidity issues in the power sector by expanding expertise in intelligent metering and automation.
