Lagos: Dangote Industries Ltd. has announced plans to develop a 600km offshore gas-gathering pipeline, which will complement its refinery and fertilizer complex that currently generates over 650 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Mr. Devakumar Edwin, Group Vice President, Oil and Gas and Fertilizer, Dangote Industries Ltd., shared this development during a tour of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Edwin revealed that the East-West offshore gas-gathering project aims to connect offshore gas producers to a pipeline for efficiently transporting gas to the shore. The engineering design for the project is complete, and construction is expected to start soon. Edwin emphasized the pipeline’s significance, stating, “We want to run, in the first place, a 600-kilometre pipeline in the sea,” enabling offshore gas producers to connect and process their gas efficiently.
The initiative is positioned as a solution to Nigeria’s existing infrastructure challenges for transporting offshore gas. Edwin noted that several gas discoveries remain untapped due to inadequate infrastructure. On the power front, the refinery contributes 501MW to its operations, alongside the fertilizer complex’s 150MW, collectively generating over 650MW for internal use, with potential future plans for commercial electricity generation.
Edwin also outlined plans to expand Dangote’s fertilizer operations, aiming to boost production from three million tonnes to twelve million tonnes annually, including new projects in Ethiopia and other African nations. The expansion will introduce additional fertilizer products, meeting the growing demand across Africa.
Furthermore, Dangote Industries is pursuing an ongoing initial public offering (IPO) to raise approximately 2.15 trillion naira, targeting an increase in the refinery’s processing capacity from 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd. The company is also developing pipelines and storage facilities across Africa to enhance fuel distribution and energy security as part of its Vision 2030 strategy to bolster industrial value addition across the continent.
