Abuja:An All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain in Delta, Dr. Tonye Timi, has emphasized that the Delta Political Vanguard (DPV) grassroots mobilisation is playing a crucial role in strengthening participatory democracy in the state.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Timi shared these insights during an interview, noting that the power of democracy is not solely dependent on elections but also relies on the capacity of citizens and organized political platforms to responsibly shape the future of their communities, state, and nation.
Timi highlighted that the DPV has shown that grassroots organization is an essential part of this process. Over the years, DPV has become a significant grassroots political platform in Delta’s political landscape, influencing the emergence of three successive governors Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, and the current governor, Sheriff Oborevwori.
He further explained that the strategic role of the vanguard in political processes underscores the importance of organized grassroots participation in democracy. DPV, with its extensive network of members and supporters across Delta’s wards and communities, has effectively mobilized and connected political leadership with the populace, contributing positively to grassroots political engagement.
In the context of the upcoming 2027 general elections, Timi remarked on the significance of DPV’s commitment, expressed at their September 30 meeting, to support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, Oborevwori, and other APC candidates. He commended this commitment, advocating for constructive support from various political and support groups across Delta.
Timi also stressed the importance of coordinating the activities of these groups to ensure their individual strengths and grassroots structures complement each other, promoting effective political participation and democratic engagement.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Timi emphasized their importance for Delta and Nigeria’s political and developmental trajectory. He urged political organizations to engage meaningfully with the democratic process, aiming for continuity, stability, development, and good governance.
In conclusion, Timi called on political actors in Delta to prioritize the state’s and Nigeria’s interests over individual considerations, urging them to work together, respect the rule of law, and conduct their activities peacefully and responsibly.
