Lagos: Founder of Woof Studios Africa, Ms. Adetutu Laditan, has highlighted the risk of Africa missing out on the burgeoning $250 billion global creator economy due to insufficient focus on monetisation and structured growth. This was emphasized during the unveiling of the ECHO Creator Accelerator induction and news conference in Lagos, which aims to train a select cohort of 21 of Africa’s emerging creative entrepreneurs.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Laditan pointed out that despite Africa’s large youth population, the continent currently accounts for only approximately $30 billion of the market. She attributed this disparity to gaps in monetisation knowledge, audience strategy, and content structuring, rather than platform bias. She underscored that creators need to understand the roles of audiences, technology, and advertisers in revenue generation, noting that a lack of advertising spend leads to no revenue.
Laditan also mentioned that African creators are not fully benefiting from global earnings on platforms like YouTube, as only a small fraction of payouts reach the continent. She reiterated that the challenge lies in limited understanding of monetisation systems and audience-driven content strategy. The ECHO programme, she explained, is a five-week accelerator designed to equip creators with skills in storytelling, strategy, and revenue generation.
She urged creators to diversify beyond advert revenue by exploring brand partnerships, products, licensing, and affiliate marketing. Highlighting the importance of community over follower count, she warned that social media audiences are ‘rented’ rather than owned. Laditan emphasized the significance of thought leadership, stating that brands now prioritize expertise and digital presence over follower metrics.
In a keynote address, Chairman of AW Network, Mr. Adebola Williams, remarked on the competitive nature of the global content space, advising creators to build clear identities to capture value. He encouraged a focus on niche authority, consistency, and emotional connection, and noted that clarity and visibility often outweigh talent in a saturated market. Williams highlighted Africa’s young, mobile-first population as a driver for rapid growth if creators adopt business-driven approaches.
One of the cohort members, Ms. Oluchukwu Chiadika, founder of Your Personal Finance Girl, shared her positive experience with the ECHO Accelerator by Woof Studios Africa. She lauded the programme for enhancing her content creation and message amplification skills and described the insights as transformative. Chiadika also commended the organisers for their strong curation and attention to detail, expressing confidence in the life-changing potential of the initiative.
