Doha: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) recently hosted a two-day meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, from 8th to 9th September 2025, focusing on education reforms under the Africa-Europe Partnership to Exchange on Education Reforms (PEERs) programme. This initiative, organized by ECOWAS’s Directorate of Education, Science and Culture, with support from the European Union, Expertise France, and other partners, aims to enhance cooperation between ECOWAS and East African Community (EAC) regions in developing equitable and inclusive education policies.
According to African Press Organization, the event opened with a welcome address by Dr. Roland Kouakou, Acting Director of Education, Science and Culture. Dr. Kouakou conveyed appreciation from Professor Fatou Sow Sarr, Honourable Commissioner for Human Development and Social Affairs, to the European Union for its support in strengthening capacity within ECOWAS Member States. He emphasized the programme’s focus on basic education reforms, particularly in gender, digital transformation, and green education.
Participants also discussed the potential introduction of the PEERs project at the upcoming 2025 ADEA Triennial. The meeting concluded with attendees expressing satisfaction with the discussions and reaffirming their commitment to advancing transformative education across the region.
