Lagos:The European Union (EU) is introducing new projects and funding opportunities aimed at supporting cultural events and artistes across Nigeria and Africa, as revealed during the inaugural Lagos Contemporary Circus Festival. This event took place at the National Theatre in Lagos and was organized with EU sponsorship under the theme ‘Circus in Motion’.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, emphasized the importance of increased cultural support during these challenging times. He highlighted the need for more cultural activities and funding for the creative economy, stating the festival exemplified the value of international cultural partnerships.
The festival featured performances by artists from Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, and Switzerland, described by Mignot as international and full of energy. The EU has also supported the Kano Creative Summit and plans to back film festivals and the Lagos Biennial of Contemporary Art, fostering collaboration between European and African creatives through training and workshops.
Mignot expressed hope for the continuation of the circus festival, aiming for it to become a regular platform for international artistes. Tola Akerele, General Manager and CEO of the National Theatre, explained that contemporary circus combines various art forms, offering Nigerian artistes opportunities to narrate their own stories and develop skills for international audiences.
Akerele emphasized the festival’s accessibility due to sponsorship, welcoming diverse age groups to experience the event. Guests arrived early to enjoy the performances, which included contributions from Ethiopian, Nigerian, Ivorian, and Swiss artists, with a vibrant atmosphere enhanced by local vendors and passing Lagos Blue Line trains.
