Post: Facility Management Experts Urge Adoption of Smart Technologies

Lagos:Stakeholders in facility management have called for the adoption of emerging technologies to enhance energy efficiency, predict maintenance needs, and improve the performance of buildings and infrastructure.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, this appeal was made during the Facilities Innovation and Leadership Summit 2.0 in Lagos, organized by the Max-Migold Facility Management Mastercraft Alumni Association. The summit, themed ‘Facilities Management in the Age of Data, Energy and Smart Operations,’ discussed the transformative potential of technology in facility management.

Mr. Sherif Daramola, President of the International Facility Management Association, Nigerian Chapter, highlighted how technology is reshaping the field, stressing the importance of using data, smart systems, and automation to manage energy consumption effectively and anticipate maintenance requirements. Daramola emphasized that facility managers should be involved from the beginning of projects to enhance value and user experience and reduce costs.

He pointed out the role of technologies like IoT sensors, Computerised Maintenance Management Systems, and Building Automation Systems in revolutionizing facility operations. These technologies can regulate lighting, monitor air quality, and optimize heating and cooling systems.

Daramola also noted that facility management is vital for Nigeria’s economic progress, advocating for collaborations between the government and professional bodies to support effective management across infrastructures. He cited Executive Order 11 and the Lagos State Infrastructure Management Authority as initiatives fostering professional engagement in managing infrastructure.

Dr. Michael Ogu of Talent Optimisation Company Ltd. urged the development of technology-oriented personnel in facility management, emphasizing the impact of AI, machine learning, and robotics in transforming the sector. However, he warned that technology should prioritize human welfare.

Mrs. Brenda Unuavworho from Aerial Consults Ltd. identified the lack of local data as a challenge for AI deployment in Nigeria, advocating for the documentation of Nigerian-specific building data. She also encouraged sustainable design practices and flexible systems to accommodate future technologies.

Mr. Paul Erubami, Managing Director of Max-Migold Facility Mastercraft Alumni Association, discussed emerging trends in facility management and emphasized the need for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. He announced plans for an advanced diploma program to enhance professional capacity in the sector.

The summit, reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, included panel sessions, technical talks, and a masterclass for professionals in facility management, real estate, and the energy sector.
