Abuja: The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and stakeholders have called for a united effort to combat AIDS in rural communities. Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, made the call at the FCT Integrated Symposium to commemorate the 2025 World AIDS Day in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event was organised by the FCT Health Secretariat under the sub-theme, ‘Innovation, Collaboration and Integration: Securing the future of HIV and the ATM Response in Nigeria’. Fasawe, represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Babagana Adams, stressed the importance of active stakeholder participation to propel the campaign forward. She highlighted that the theme, ‘Overcoming Disruptions: Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response’, offered a platform to discuss and strategize on mobilizing local resources to address existing gaps.
Fasawe emphasized that the initiative aims to prevent additional challenges for Nigerians living with HIV/AIDS. She noted the necessity of extending efforts to rural areas, where the message is most needed. Identifying strengths and areas needing improvement was deemed crucial, with security challenges posing significant concerns, particularly in accessing certain localities. The government is dedicated to ensuring access, affordability, and accessibility to improve treatment success rates, acknowledging that social challenges such as stigma and discrimination persist for many living with HIV.
Dr. Dan Gadzama, Director of the FCT Department of Public Health, explained that the department, through a First-Class Committee, conducts grassroots operations closely with area councils. This approach involves community interactions, discussions, and town hall meetings across the FCT. He highlighted the educational efforts about HIV, including treatment and preventive services available at all facilities and area councils, noting that treatment is offered at no cost. The grassroots team collaborates with communities, people living with HIV, and civil society organizations.
Dr. Tangkat Hosle, FCT Regional Manager at the Institute of Neurology, Nigeria, praised the Nigerian government for its dedication to the fight against AIDS. He encouraged stakeholders to assume ownership and contribute effectively to addressing HIV/AIDS. The focus on innovations and sustainability is seen as timely, urging healthcare facilities and government at all levels to actively participate in the battle against HIV/AIDS.
