Abuja: The Federal Government on Tuesday initiated a nationwide distribution of 515,720 bags of urea and NPK fertilisers to 128,930 smallholder farmers in 25 states and the FCT. Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi, announced the program under the National Agricultural Development Fund’s (NADF) Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (FISP). This initiative aims to enhance agricultural productivity, bolster food security, and improve farmers’ livelihoods in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Vice President Shettima emphasized the administration’s commitment to uplifting farmers and increasing agricultural productivity through the provision of fertilisers. The program targets smallholder farmers cultivating less than 0.5 hectares, who are crucial to Nigeria’s food production system. Shettima highlighted the significance of transparency and accountability in the distribution process, urging that the inputs reach the intended beneficiaries, particularly women, youths, and vulnerable farmers.
Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, Executive Secretary of NADF, stated that this intervention comes at a critical stage of the farming season to reduce production costs, enhance yields, and reinforce national food supply. He underscored food security as central to economic stability, rural prosperity, job creation, and the wellness of Nigerian households. Ibrahim assured that all fertilisers distributed are locally produced, traceable, and marked ‘Not for Sale’ to ensure accountability.
Rep. Bello Kaoje, Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture Production and Services, praised the initiative as a direct measure against hunger. He emphasized its potential to boost food production, stabilize food prices, and support inclusive economic growth.
