Post: Ganduje Says Lagos Airport Upgrades Strengthen Global Competitiveness

Lagos: Dr Umar Ganduje, Board Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has stated that the Murtala Muhammed International Airport has undergone significant upgrades, positioning it to compete with leading international airports. He made these remarks during a facility tour assessing completed works and ongoing modernization efforts at the Lagos airport.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ganduje highlighted that the installation of new scanners, automated e-gates, and improved technology is transforming passenger processing and aligning the airport with global best practices. He commended President Bola Tinubu and FAAN’s leadership for fostering an environment that enables private airlines to grow and enhance their competitive edge.

Ganduje noted that private airlines previously faced high mortality rates, but the improved infrastructure now supports better performance and increased profitability. He also lauded FAAN for securing key aviation certifications that bolster Nigeria’s safety profile and enhance international confidence in local operations. He expressed optimism that ongoing service improvements would facilitate easier and more timely certifications for the nation.

During the tour, Ganduje observed numerous ongoing projects and several abandoned sites requiring urgent attention. He identified emerging challenges related to safety, security, and infrastructure that need addressing to ensure smooth airport operations. He emphasized that resolving these issues would boost passenger confidence and attract more international airlines to Nigerian airports.

Ganduje urged FAAN to invest in landscaping, as improved surroundings create better first impressions for travelers entering the country. He also stressed the importance of efficient runway lighting for safe aircraft take-offs and landings on both domestic and international routes. Expressing concern over security lapses, he called on security agencies to improve coordination and maintain higher professional standards at the airport. He highlighted the need for Customs, Immigration, NDLEA, and others to deliver higher service levels to ensure seamless travel experiences for passengers.

Ganduje confirmed the award of the second runway contract at Kano airport, with mobilization to the site already underway. He added that the FAAN board would continue touring airports across all geopolitical zones to review progress and identify further needs. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Ganduje recently inspected Kano airport, where he directed contractors to expedite ongoing construction projects.
