Abuja: The Commander, Guards Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Adebisi Onasanya, has charged young soldiers to sustain vigilance, discipline, and professionalism after completing Exercise Shining Star. Onasanya gave the charge at the closing of the field training exercise at the 176 Guards Battalion Forward Operating Base, Kwali.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, this statement was made public by Lt. Odunola Olawuyi, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, in Abuja. He stated that the exercise was designed to sharpen the tactical proficiency, combat readiness, and operational effectiveness of soldiers from the 90 Regular Recruits Intake. The training provided soldiers with experience in fighting and clearance patrols, raids, roadblocks, ambushes, and cordon and search operations.
The commander emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing contemporary security challenges, highlighting that the exercise involved collaboration with the Police, NSCDC, and Vigilante Group of Nigeria. Effective intelligence sharing, coordination, and interoperability were stressed as critical elements for successful joint operations.
During the exercise, troops, in conjunction with other security agencies, conducted patrols and clearance operations in communities and hinterland areas. These operations disrupted criminal activities, restricted the freedom of action for criminal elements, and led to the arrest of several suspected illegal miners. Equipment used for illegal mining was seized, underscoring the commitment of security agencies to protect national resources and support lawful economic activities.
Brig.-Gen. Onasanya described the exercise as evidence of the Brigade’s dedication to continuous training, professional development, and operational readiness. He reminded young soldiers that their development as military professionals is an ongoing process that requires continuous learning, discipline, and dedication. He urged them to sustain the knowledge, skills, and professional relationships acquired during the exercise and continue striving for excellence.
The commander also reiterated the Brigade’s commitment to its motto, ‘Vigilance and Sacrifice,’ while emphasizing the importance of safety, discipline, and professionalism in all military operations. He expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for his support of training and operational activities and commended the participating security agencies for their cooperation and dedication to creating a safer Federal Capital Territory and its environs.
Exercise Shining Star commenced with its tactical phase on Sept. 14 at the General O.A. Azazi Parade Ground, Gwagwalada, and concluded on Sept. 18. Onasanya subsequently declared the exercise formally closed, in accordance with Army Headquarters training directives.
