Abeokuta:The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ogun Primary Health Care Development Board (OGPHCDB) have initiated a training program for health workers aimed at improving community mobilization and the utilization of healthcare services.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the JICA Programme Coordinator, Dr. Ajibike Adewole, announced the launch of the training on Wednesday, emphasizing its role in strengthening health workers’ capacity to help communities make informed healthcare decisions. The initiative is expected to enhance the efforts towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Nigeria.
Adewole highlighted the importance of community mobilization for effective healthcare access, noting that cultural and social structures influence healthcare choices. The program will equip mobilizers with necessary knowledge and communication skills, enabling them to become state-level master trainers and subsequently train others at local government areas (LGAs).
Dr. Esther Ogunlesi, Director of OGPHCDB, stated that the training addresses concerns over declining health service utilization across LGAs. She praised JICA for its support and noted that while the state has the infrastructure and resources for healthcare, generating demand remains a challenge. An integrated flip chart will be introduced to standardize messaging, with a focus on delivering information in local languages.
Dr. Folarin Solape, State Coordinator of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), commended JICA for its support in policies and healthcare revitalization. The first phase of the program will involve 20 facilities across Odeda and Ikenne LGAs, with plans to expand to all 20 LGAs in the future.
