Abuja: The management of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi (JOSTUM), has announced its decision to enforce punitive measures against students who participate in banned signing-out activities. This announcement aligns with the Federal Government’s directive prohibiting such practices in tertiary institutions.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. John David, the JOSTUM Registrar and Secretary to the Senate, emphasized that the decision aims to uphold university values and culture. The university had proactively banned signing-out activities on February 15th, prior to the federal directive, citing concerns over the nature of these activities.
The registrar noted that signing-out activities, which include students scribbling on clothes and engaging in disorderly conduct, have been associated with excessive noise, partying, and other behaviors deemed unsafe. These practices, he asserted, undermine the dignity of graduates and tarnish the institution’s reputation.
Dr. David highlighted the university’s commitment to ensuring that students graduate with dignity and decorum. He warned that any involvement in signing-out activities would result in disciplinary actions such as suspension, rustication, or the withholding of results and certificates. University staff and security personnel have been tasked with enforcing compliance with the ban.
Parents and guardians were urged to discourage their children and wards from engaging in these activities. The university administration seeks the cooperation of all stakeholders to maintain student safety and campus security.
The statement concluded by advising students to vacate the hostels immediately after completing their examinations.
