Abuja: A presidential aspirant of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Julius Filani, has announced his withdrawal from the party’s replacement presidential primary ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, this decision comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) provided political parties with a window to substitute their presidential candidates.
Filani, a member of the YPP Board of Trustees (BoT) and a key aspirant for the party’s presidential ticket, expressed that his decision was fueled by a commitment to the party’s growth, unity, and stability. He also cited the logistical challenges associated with conducting a nationwide direct primary as a significant factor in his decision-making process.
“This historic, strategic decision is born out of profound respect for the party’s institutional growth, systemic stability, and the immense logistical realities of the current political landscape,” Filani stated. He emphasized that leadership is about making personal sacrifices for the collective good, rather than holding a position or title. His withdrawal is not a retreat from politics or the YPP, but rather a calculated move to bolster the party’s strength and focus ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Filani highlighted the YPP’s commitment to democratic transparency and internal participation, acknowledging the immense human, financial, and logistical demands of conducting a nationwide direct primary across 8,809 wards and 774 Local Government Areas. By stepping aside, he hopes to allow another qualified aspirant to emerge while maintaining the party’s unity and organizational strength.
He reassured that this decision does not signify an abandonment of his political vision or dedication to addressing national challenges. Filani remains committed to the YPP and its future, pledging to support its leadership and eventual presidential candidate. Moreover, his commitment to humanitarian activities and grassroots empowerment will continue, underscoring his belief that impactful change can occur without holding political office.
Filani expressed confidence that the YPP will emerge stronger from this process and called upon party members and stakeholders to stay united and focused on the broader goal of national development.
