Kaduna:Stakeholders in Kaduna State have begun evaluating the civic space to identify barriers hindering citizen engagement in governance. This assessment is part of the People, Influence and Action (PIA) Project, which was launched at an inception meeting organized by the Tax Justice and Governance Platform, Kaduna.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the meeting was held in collaboration with the BEACON of Transformative and Inclusive Development Center and supported by the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre. The project aims to document obstacles to civic participation and find ways for communities to impact decisions affecting their lives.
Mr. Simeon Olatunde, Coordinator of TJ and GP in Kaduna, highlighted concerns over decreasing civic participation, noting that involvement is often limited to familiar groups, excluding many, especially vulnerable populations. He emphasized the need to broaden the focus beyond traditional taxation and budgeting to include the wider civic space.
The project will examine who holds influence, who is excluded, and how community priorities reach decision-makers. It aims to expand and protect the current civic space, particularly focusing on marginalized groups such as women, youths, children, and persons with disabilities.
Mercy Madaki from the Kaduna State Ministry of Women Affairs expressed support for the initiative, urging stakeholders to turn findings into practical community actions. Rilwan Muhammad from the Kaduna State Disabilities Affairs Board also pledged support, highlighting the importance of accessibility.
Traditional leader Alhaji Garba Umar emphasized the role of traditional institutions in connecting government and communities, advocating for ongoing engagement beyond the initial meeting. Mr. Tara Wyah from the Kaduna State Open Government Partnership stressed the importance of the initiative in light of global concerns about shrinking civic spaces.
Sadiq Mustapha, Coordinator of TJ and GP in Kano, stated that the PIA Subnational Project, targeting Kaduna, Kano, and Plateau, will run from August 2026 to March 2030. Implemented by CISLAC under Christian Aid’s People in Action Signature Programme, it seeks to expand civic space, strengthen citizen power, and promote inclusive governance through various activities and engagements.
The project will use evidence and learning to strengthen citizen influence and is expected to conclude with a comprehensive analysis identifying key actors and opportunities for civic participation, alongside safe channels for information and feedback.
