Kaduna:Tourism graduates from Kaduna Polytechnic have been assured of a promising future as the tourism industry continues to expand with new opportunities.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Maryam Abdullahi, Head of the Department of Tourism Management Technology at Kaduna Polytechnic, emphasized the bright prospects for tourism graduates during a World Tourism Day event. The celebration, organized by the department in collaboration with the Career Services Centre of the Polytechnic, focused on the theme ‘Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Skills for the Future of Tourism Development in Nigeria.’
Dr. Abdullahi highlighted the multi-sectoral nature of the tourism industry, which encompasses hospitality, catering, transportation, travel agencies, airlines, ministries, tourism institutions, hotels, and related establishments. She noted that trained personnel are essential to manage these sectors and contribute to tourism development in Nigeria.
The event aimed to engage students, industry stakeholders, and the public on the impact of digital tools and artificial intelligence in transforming tourism. Dr. Abdullahi pointed out that the increasing demand for leisure and travel necessitates highly skilled human resources to tackle industry challenges. The theme of the event was particularly relevant as technology continues to influence how people discover, plan, and experience travel.
Dr. Sulaiman Umar, Rector of Kaduna Polytechnic, represented by Dr. Aliyu Usman, Deputy Rector of Academics, stated that tourism could become a significant component of Nigeria’s economy. He noted that about 30 countries rely heavily on tourism for their economies and that Nigeria has the potential to do the same. The institution’s management is committed to supporting efforts to develop the sector.
Ayodele Arokoyo, National President of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria, presented a paper highlighting the rapid transformation of tourism. He explained that modern travelers rely on digital platforms for various services, and tourism students need to be competent and adaptable to remain relevant. Arokoyo also discussed how artificial intelligence could assist tourism businesses with customer service and other functions while noting the importance of responsible handling of AI-generated information.
The event also recognized Ibrahim Bamalli, the Madakin Gonan Zazzau, as the Heritage and Cultural Ambassador of the Department of Tourism Management Technology. Titi Abubakar, wife of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and an alumna and former lecturer of the department, received an Award of Excellence.
