Lagos:Morgan Capital Investment Ltd. has advised Nigerians to expand their investment strategies beyond real estate, emphasizing the opportunity presented by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO) to increase participation in the capital market.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Chukwudi Nga, Managing Director of Morgan Capital Investment Ltd., highlighted the tendency of Nigerians to favor tangible assets like land and houses. However, he cautioned against concentrating wealth in a single asset class, advising that both real estate and equities can play vital roles in a diversified investment portfolio.
Nga pointed out that equities provide benefits such as diversification, potential dividend income, and business growth participation without the direct maintenance responsibilities linked to physical property. He encouraged a balanced approach where investors can own both real estate and equities, each offering unique advantages.
He emphasized the divisibility of equities, allowing investors to gradually build portfolios with relatively small amounts. Investors could diversify their exposure across various sectors including banking, telecommunications, industrial goods, consumer goods, and energy.
Nga also noted the significance of the Dangote petroleum refinery and petrochemicals IPO, which includes 4.1 billion ordinary shares at N525 per share, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares. This IPO provides a chance for Nigerians to engage in a large-scale industrial asset via the capital market, challenging the notion that major transactions are only for the wealthy.
He advised prospective investors to evaluate the refinery’s fundamentals, such as its scale, market opportunity, operational integration, and associated risks, rather than relying solely on the Dangote brand.
Nga stressed the importance of building trust in the capital market through investor protection, transparent reporting, rule enforcement, and simplifying the investment process. He also highlighted the role of technology and financial education in expanding market participation, particularly among young Nigerians, to dispel misconceptions about stock market investing.
Finally, Nga urged Nigerians interested in the Dangote IPO and other securities to use regulated investment channels, thoroughly review offer documents, and understand the risks before investing.
