Lagos:Consumers and traders in Lagos are increasingly cautious about the potential adulteration of palm oil, relying on taste, color, and aroma to detect impurities.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, many consumers are worried about the quality of palm oil and the possibility of it being mixed with coloring substances to enhance its appearance. These concerns are prompting careful observation before purchase.
Mrs. Chidinma Nwabueze, a trader at Oyingbo Market, mentioned sourcing palm oil from trusted suppliers, including some from the eastern part of Nigeria. She emphasized the importance of familiarity with the product to identify adulteration, which may not be evident until cooking.
Ms. Goodness Okoro, a resident of Apapa Road, shared her experience of needing more oil than usual to achieve the desired soup color, raising her suspicion about adulteration. She is willing to pay more for high-quality palm oil to ensure her food retains its taste and health benefits.
Mummy Joy from Ikotun and Mr. Okoro Ebube from the Costain area echoed these concerns. Ebube highlighted the challenge of distinguishing adulterated palm oil, which may be mixed with coloring substances, and urged authorities to investigate.
The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has also raised concerns about the increasing sophistication of palm oil adulteration, urging consumers to be vigilant. This warning was issued following a presentation at the Lagos State Food Safety Conference and Exhibition 2026.
