Lagos: The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) has called on students and residents to take tree planting as a shared responsibility to protect the environment and tackle climate change.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okuneye, made the call at the 2026 Tree Planting Campaign held at the university’s auditorium, Otto-Ijanikin, Lagos. The event, themed ‘Tree for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility’, emphasized the importance of collective efforts in environmental sustainability.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Daodu Adedayo, Lafiaji-Okuneye highlighted that the exercise transcends ceremonial significance, symbolizing a commitment to environmental stewardship and future generations. “Every tree planted today represents hope for a cleaner environment, healthier communities, and a sustainable future for children yet unborn,” she stated.
The vice-chancellor reminisced about the inception of the state’s annual tree planting initi
ative in 2008 under former Gov. Babatunde Fashola, aimed at environmental restoration. Successive administrations have since sustained and expanded this initiative, embedding an enduring environmental culture across the state.
Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye lauded Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for reinforcing policies to combat climate change, improve air quality, and foster a healthier environment. She stressed that the campaign’s theme underscores the notion that environmental protection is a collective responsibility, not solely the government’s.
She urged students, staff, and community members to engage actively in tree planting and to safeguard existing trees. “Trees are the lungs of our cities; they absorb carbon emissions, improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and preserve biodiversity,” she remarked, adding that each tree planted is a step toward mitigating global warming.
The vice-chancellor reiterated LASUED’s commitment to promoting environmental awareness through education and community initiatives. She pro
udly noted the institution’s accolade as Lagos State’s Best Tree Planting Institution in 2024, viewing it as encouragement to continue fostering a culture of sustainability.
She emphasized the role of universities in cultivating environmentally conscious graduates who will advocate for sustainable practices in various spheres. Lafiaji-Okuneye concluded by stressing the importance of nurturing and protecting the seedlings beyond the ceremony, viewing tree planting as a lifelong commitment.
Residents were encouraged to bolster governmental efforts by planting trees in homes, schools, and neighborhoods, benefiting both current and future generations.
