Post: Late General Obiakor Honored for Contributions to Global Peacekeeping


Abuja:The Nigerian Army has paid tribute to the late retired Lt.-Gen. Chikadibia Obiakor, celebrating his exceptional career as a soldier and international peacekeeper. His service was noted for elevating Nigeria’s profile in global security.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, highlighted Obiakor’s professionalism, courage, and commitment during an Evening of Tributes in Abuja. Obiakor, who joined the Nigerian Army in 1973, held numerous command positions and played a pivotal role in international peacekeeping.



Obiakor commanded the ECOMOG Artillery Brigade in Liberia and was instrumental in coordinating the country’s elections in 1996 and 1997. He became the first Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia, providing significant leadership. In 2008, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed him as Military Adviser for UN Peacekeeping Operations, making him the first African to hold this position.



His post-retirement contributions included leading United Nations assignments in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Syria. In 2018, he led a UN special investigation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and chaired a UN Board of Inquiry in Syria.



Major-General John Adeyemo, Commander of the Corps of Artillery, praised Obiakor as a mentor and a distinguished member of the Artillery Corps. His achievements continue to inspire the corps and the broader military community.



Senator Ben Obi described Obiakor as a strategic leader and peacekeeper, highlighting his efforts to promote peace in Nigeria, especially before the 2015 elections. Obiakor’s contributions extended beyond his military career, reflecting values of service and patriotism.



Chinonso Obiakor, the late general’s son, expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian army, and others who supported the family during their time of mourning. He shared the impactful lessons learned from his father, emphasizing patience, contentment, and integrity.



The tribute event gathered military officers, diplomats, and community leaders to honor Obiakor, who passed away at 75 on May 27, 2026. His career was marked by senior command roles in the Nigerian army and significant international peacekeeping contributions.
