Post: NAWOJ Calls on Women to Assert Leadership Roles Ahead of 2027 Elections

Abuja: The National President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim, has urged women to take decisive leadership steps ahead of the 2027 general elections to boost participation in governance. Ibrahim made the call during a marketplace advocacy outreach in Wuse Market, Abuja, organized by NAWOJ FCT, emphasizing the urgency of mobilizing women at the grassroots for political inclusion.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ibrahim stressed the need to end women’s marginalization in decision-making, declaring they would no longer be ‘mere participants in politics’ but would influence outcomes, lead actively, and win elective positions. She highlighted the importance of addressing issues such as gender-based violence, health and reproductive rights, economic opportunities, and the absence of women in leadership.

Ibrahim assured that NAWOJ would sustain advocacy efforts to ensure women were informed, empowered, and fully represented. She insisted that women were no longer asking for space but were ready to claim it, urging women to not underestimate their voices and to actively participate in shaping their future.

Mrs. Bassey Ita-Ikpang, Chairperson of NAWOJ FCT, stated that the initiative targeted grassroots empowerment directly for women nationwide. She highlighted the role of women journalists in advocating for women’s rights and empowerment, focusing on critical areas such as vaccine awareness, reproductive health, and women’s participation in politics.

Ms. Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council, also emphasized the need to educate the electorate on civic rights and responsibilities while ensuring improved access to essential healthcare services. Participants at the event commended the organizers, noting that the initiative enhanced their knowledge of reproductive health and the benefits of participating in electoral processes, encouraging transparent, inclusive, and fair elections nationwide.
