Abuja: The National Defence College Officers’ Wives Association (NDCOWA) has reached out to educational institutions, government bodies, healthcare systems, and the community to collaborate with parents in nurturing and raising stable children for the future. This call to action was made by NDCOWA Coordinator, Mrs. Hauwa Ahmed, during a welfare lecture organized by the association.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the lecture themed ‘Child Well-being: Nurture, Educate and Protect’, emphasized the importance of children’s holistic development. Mrs. Ahmed highlighted that children’s well-being encompasses physical and mental health, education, safety, emotional development, protection, and a supportive environment. She urged stakeholders to address the factors influencing child development and to improve educational access while protecting children from harm and exploitation, especially in the digital age.
Mrs. Ahmed emphasized the need for a collaborative approach involving parents, schools, healthcare professionals, government institutions, community leaders, and religious organizations in child upbringing. She reiterated that investing in children’s well-being is an investment in the nation’s future. Ahmed also assured the association’s commitment to initiatives supporting the welfare of personnel and their families through various programs.
Mrs. Mernan Oluyede, President of the Defence and Police Officers Wives’ Association (DEPOWA), added that nurturing, educating, and protecting children are interconnected responsibilities. She pointed out the challenges posed by digital environments, stressing the need for digital awareness, parental engagement, and continuous communication to protect children from online risks. Oluyede also highlighted the unique pressures faced by families in the defense and police communities and the support systems available through officers’ wives’ associations.
The discussion underscored the importance of understanding a child’s mental and emotional well-being, urging parents to be vigilant about behavioral changes and to seek professional support when necessary. Oluyede concluded by emphasizing the role of families in strengthening national security and commended NDCOWA for organizing the timely program aligned with contemporary challenges.
